Photo a Week: 16/52 – Fire Wheels

Not strictly speaking photo of the week, as I took it last week, but I just got around to processing the set  it came from.   Light painting, long exposure and night photography is one of my personal fun projects.

It’s probably hard to tell, but it’s raining like crazy in this shot – despite how it may appear there was absolutely NO chance of anything catching on fire!   These are 15 seconds of sparks compressed into one shot.

Photo A Week: 15/52 – Woods and Caves

Some photographers go to the park and take shots of ducks when they’re bored, but I always gravitate towards trees and woodland.  Had a nice day wandering and taking photos in a large and pleasant wood that I never knew about up on Rhiwbina Hill.

Photo A Week: temporary hiatus!

I’ve taken a little break from the photo a week project for the past fortnight or so as I’ve been kept quite busy with web and graphic design work, and on developing my workflow for video tours. I think HD video tours are the logical next step in property marketing, and I’m making sure I’m prepared for it!

Photo Thing A Week: 13/52 – Graphic Design

No photo this week as I’ve been kept busy with graphic design work, doing an ad design for one of the agencies, and trying to finish up my own marketing flyer!

Photo A Week: 12/52 – More Property!

I don’t want to put too many property shots on here for Photo A Week, as a large part of this project is to get me taking pictures of OTHER things, but sometimes I just get to take photos of a really nice house!

The lounge shot is my nomination for photo of the week.

Photo A Week: 11/52 – Cat Portrait

Well, this week I had plans to go out and get a particular shot, but they were unfortunately curtailed when I tripped on something in West Wales and injured my knee, so I haven’t been out other than for 2 property shoots at the beginning of the week.

I don’t want another property shot as my shot for the week, so instead there’s a photo of a very fluffy and territorial cat from the first shoot, that followed me around constantly, watching the intruder in it’s domain.

Photo A Week: 10/52 – Bristol Interior

This week my photo a week is a property shot from a job I did earlier in the week in Bristol.   It was a beautiful flat, with tasteful decor in a great location in Redcliffe.

I got several good photos from this property, but my favourite has to be this one.

Bedroom shot, Bristol

I don’t normally go for this type of shot, preferring to go wider to show the context – but this little vignette with the shuttered windows, nice light and elegant plant drew me in.   It’s an attempt at a somewhat more aspirational image than the usual straightforward property shots.

Some houses simply don’t lend themselves to this kind of shot, but this one really did!   From the lounge you could even see St Mary Redcliffe Church framed by the doors of the balcony.

Photo A Week: 9/52 – Castell Coch, Spring

Whenever I drive up the A470 I always see Castell Coch, and most of the time I’m on the way to a job, or I’m going out and left my camera at home. Well, today I remembered to take my camera before I left the house! Fortunately, it was a nice day with big fluffy white clouds and a blue sky.

The only issue was that Castell Coch is a distant subject from most good viewpoints, and really needs a telephoto lens – something in the 200-400mm range would be ideal, and I don’t have anything in that range, as it’s not relevant for the property work I do except in very rare cases, when it’s cheaper to hire a really good one for a day! So, any picture I took showed a lot of hill, and a pretty small castle. Fortunately, the 7D has enough resolution that I can crop significantly to recompose the image and enlarge the castle, and still end up with a file that’s almost as good as a full frame from my previous camera (the shot above is of course resized for the blog).

Photo A Week: 8/52 – Woodland Scenes

I’ve always had a fondness for trees and forests, and with spring upon us I headed out to a wood on the outskirts of Cardiff to try and make some interesting woodland images.   I came back with 25 or so keepers, and have narrowed it down for photo a week to 5 I particularly like.

Deciding between them is hard, but at a pinch I’d probably have to choose Zebra Tree as my photo for the week simply because it was an interesting tree, with unusual bark – it was wrinkled, as if the bark had sagged down the trunk , the hollows and rise of the trunk have accumulated differing amounts of moss and lichen, giving rise to the striped pattern.
